Kevin Stuart Wardell, a former executive at Louisville, Ky.-based Norton Healthcare, died Feb. 26 at age 74, according to his obituary.

In 2003, Mr. Wardell joined Norton Healthcare, for which he led the downtown Louisville adult teaching and tertiary care hospital until 2013. From 2014 to his retirement in 2016, he served as executive leader of the Norton Cancer Institute.

According to his LinkedIn page, he spent more than four decades total in hospital and healthcare management. He previously held senior executive positions with Houston-based MD Anderson Cancer Center; Advocate Health Care and Lutheran General Hospital in Chicago; Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio; and Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Health.

“Kevin Wardell was a thoughtful and dedicated leader, and a mentor of many up-and-coming leaders, whose contributions to Norton Healthcare and our community will have a lasting impact,” Norton said in a statement shared with Becker’s. “We are grateful for his service and extend our deepest condolences to his family.”
Norton Healthcare is a nine-hospital system with nearly 24,000 employees.

At Becker's 4th Annual CEO + CFO Roundtable, taking place November 2–5 in Chicago, more than 1,500 hospital and health system executives tackle decisions that determine whether organizations thrive or merely survive: protecting margins under cost pressure, choosing where to grow, renegotiating payer relationships, stabilizing the workforce and proving real ROI on technology.
