Mr. Pirolli was 84.

After beginning his career in hospital administration, Mr. Pirolli played an instrumental role in founding the first John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Stratford, N.J., which opened in 1965. He served as president of Kennedy Memorial Hospitals – University Medical Center from 1981 to 1992. In May 1992, he was named president emeritus, a title he held until his retirement in 1997.

An U.S. Air Force veteran, Mr. Pirolli helped grow Kennedy from a 99-bed community hospital in Stratford to a 607-bed multispecialty system.

“He was a mentor to many of us who knew him over the years … [and] the founding president of Kennedy, but we are forever grateful that Augie Pirolli’s legacy lives on vibrantly in who we are today as a health system,” said current Kennedy President and CEO Joseph W. Devine.
