Owners of New Jersey’s Troubled Meadowlands Hospital Accuse Former Operator of “Cannibalizing” the Facility

The current owners of Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center in Secaucus, N.J., have said the hospital’s former operator, LibertyHealth Systems, “cannibalized” the facility before selling it last year, according to an article from the Hudson Reporter.

While giving a reporter a tour, hospital owners Richard Lipsky, MD, and Tamara Dunaev said deficiencies discovered in a state inspection and listed in a 25-page report that was released two weeks ago were the result of the hospital workers’ union, which “sabotage[d]” certain operations before the inspection. The owners have said the union resented working harder under the new ownership, and have also called the union a “malignant, cancerous, malicious organization,” according to the report.

The owners say LibertyHealth cannibalized the hospital and attempted to lure valuable employees and physicans to Jersey City Medical Center, which it also operates.

The union and LibertyHealth were surprised by the accusations last week and said such accusations were untrue and unfounded, according to the report. A JCMC official said the hospital was not allowed to recruit any doctors from MHMC at the time of the sale but indicated that employees were independent and free to leave if they chose to do so.
