Shands Jacksonville opposes Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA’s plan to open a trauma center in Orange Park, Fla., on Oct. 1. The hospital, which operates the only trauma center in Northeast Florida, estimates a loss of 25 percent of its patients to the new center.
Three other hospitals — Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Fla., and Bayfront Medical Center in Saint Petersburg, Fla. — filed similar complaints about Florida’s new trauma review process last month, as HCA plans to open trauma units in nearby Bradenton and Hudson. In total, HCA is proposing five new trauma centers across the state.
