According to the report, nearly four dozen California hospitals submitted a proposal for hospital construction within the past five years, which “account for an estimated $1.3 billion in construction projects that have not yet been completed.”
Despite funding through healthcare facilities fees, former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger enacted furloughs and hiring freezes in 2009, which contributed to the agency’s backlog of unapproved hospital construction plans. The state is reportedly doing more to speed up approvals, including a “fast-track review” for plans that cost less than $100,000.
