Disagreement over abortion coverage threatens passage of AHCA

The Senate parliamentarian charged with judging the legality of language in the AHCA has said the bill’s ban on using tax credits for private insurance plans covering abortion cannot be included as written, according to The Hill.

The Hyde language, as the abortion clause is called, only allows federal money to be used for abortions in cases of rape or incest. However, the parliamentarian flagged this provision because it attempts to use budgetary legislation to affect abortion policy.

Conservative politicians who run on anti-abortion platforms and rely on the support of anti-abortion groups have said they would have serious problems passing the AHCA if the clause is removed.
