The health system expects an annual loss of $2.1 million due to the state’s Medicaid cuts. Other Charleston hospitals have also been affected by the decrease in Medicaid rates. The Medical University of South Carolina Hospital expects a loss of $20 million in the upcoming fiscal year and a need to cut staff, while Roper St. Francis Healthcare predicts a loss of approximately $2 million
The South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced that beginning in July, Medicaid reimbursements will decrease by 7 percent for most hospitals and by up to 10 percent for physicians. The department expects these reductions and others will save the state approximately $125 million in the fiscal year that begins on July 1.
