CEO to know: Dr. Mark Taubman of University of Rochester Medical Center

Mark Taubman, MD, was named senior vice president for health sciences and CEO of University Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center in September. His new role will come into effect Jan. 1, 2015.

Dr. Taubman currently serves as the dean of the school of medicine and dentistry at URMC, a role he will continue to fulfill after assuming the additional roles of senior vice president and CEO. He is also a professor of cardiology.

While serving as dean, Dr. Taubman was credited with steering the medical school through turbulent financial times amid reductions in funding for research as well as graduate medical education. He led the creation of the medical center’s strategic plan for research that fosters focused collaborative science. Dr. Taubman also recruited new leadership to the University of Rochester Medical Faculty Group and initiated major improvements in efficiency, patient-centeredness and collaboration with referring clinicians.

A board-certified cardiologist, Dr. Taubman joined URMC in February 2003 as the chief of cardiology and Paul N. Yu Professor of Medicine. Dr. Taubman became chair of the department of medicine and Charles E. Dewey Professor of Medicine in May 2007 and served in that role until being named dean.

Prior to coming to the University of Rochester, Dr. Taubman served as professor of medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, where he developed a research program in vascular biology, focusing on the regulation of pro-inflammatory and pro-thrombotic molecules in smooth muscle cells and in the arterial wall.

Dr. Taubman earned his MD from New York University School of Medicine in New York City and completed his residency in internal medicine at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. He completed fellowships in cardiology at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital.
