Cash-Strapped Southwest Alabama Medical Center Abruptly Closes

Southwest Alabama Medical Center in Thomasville has abruptly closed its doors due to the owner's inability to pay bills, according to a local FOX report.

"Basically came down to she wasn't going to be able to pay the ER staff and other things to get through the weekend, and it just became apparent that there was no way that they could keep open," Thomasville Mayor Sheldon Day said in the report.

Although the city received approval to build a replacement hospital, the owner could not improve the hospital's finances in time, according to the report.

The hospital owner, who remained unnamed in the report, is in the process of selling the facility and already has several offers, according to the report. In the meantime, the hospital has shuttered its inpatient services, and the city is funding the hospital's emergency operations.
