Cardiologist Robert Califf nominated to lead FDA: 3 things to know

President Barack Obama has nominated Robert Califf, MD, a prominent cardiologist and medical researcher, as the next commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, according to a report from The Washington Post.

Here are three things to know about Dr. Califf.

1. He joined the FDA as deputy commissioner earlier this year from Durham, N.C.-based Duke University, where he had served as a professor of medicine, a leading pharmaceutical researcher and the vice chancellor for clinical and translational research.

2. He has led many pivotal clinical trials, been among the most cited medical authors in the U.S. and for years served on various FDA advisory committees, according to the report.

3.  If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Dr. Califf will replace Stephen Ostroff, MD, who has served as acting commissioner since Margaret Hamburg, MD, stepped down earlier this year.
