Become a Better Interviewer: 6 Steps

Most of us should be able to recall a not-so-great interview. “You show up professionally early, ready to take on the interview — only to find out your interviewer barely looked at your résumé and can’t even pronounce your name correctly,” Connie Gentry wrote in a blog post for Select International.

This can leave candidates leaving the interview with a permanent negative impression — one that will not only tarnish the company in their eyes but, through word of mouth, others’ as well. Here are six key steps to personable, effective and positive interview experiences.

1. Help the interviewee feel at ease. Make appropriate eye contact. Ask easy questions first — maybe about their background — to make candidates more relaxed.

2. Prepare. Familiarize yourself with interview materials and the job description. Also review the candidate’s résumé and other relevant background well before the interview begins — not when they walk into your office.

3. Ask open-ended questions. Fight the urge to ask yes-or-no questions. Instead, begin sentences with phrases like: tell me, explain, when, describe and how.

4. Follow the 70-30 rule. The interviewer should be listening for 70 percent of the interview and talking 30 percent of the time. Demonstrate that you’re listening by rephrasing the interview candidate’s answers in future questions.

5. Avoid disruptions. Conduct the interview in a private area. Turn off your phone. If conducting multiple interviews, ensure that everyone involved in the interview process understands the transitions between candidates.

6. Conclude the interview on a good note. Clarify any areas that require more information. Thank interviewees for their time and interest, and revisit the company’s benefits once more. Answer any questions and walk them to the door.
