Question: What technology has taken on greater significance or value during the pandemic?
Pradeep Kadambi: It is amazing to see how a defining event such as this pandemic forces you to adapt to certain things you perhaps had resisted. One such technology is Telemedicine. I can tell you that we’ve have this capability for several years and on a given day prior to the pandemic, we would have about 30 visits at best. However, since mid-March, the ramp is was significant and currently averaging over 1000 visits a day. It accounts for more than half our average daily visits!
Q: How has the coronavirus pandemic forced a paradigm shift in your line of work, from your perspective?
PK: It has enabled us to be more productive from an alternate work site (home) when feasible. This is true for non-patient facing functions (billing and coding, administrative, regulatory etc.). We check temperatures for patients before entering clinics and practicing social/physical distancing aggressively in clinics. There are no more than 3-4 patients in the clinic waiting areas at a given time. How we are going to manage this when the pandemic is behind us remains to be seen.
Q: What is the most underrated trait of the best leaders?
PK: Some underrated traits, in my opinion, are: being calm and patient, being comfortable with vulnerability, ability to listen and ability to adapt.
Q: What is one bold goal that you, your team or your organization is staring down for 2021?
PK: From our perspective, telemedicine is here to stay. Unfortunately, it took a pandemic to get there. Regardless of how Payors view this service, we plan to offer it to all our patients. We want our investment in the platform and the time spent to train our personnel and patients to be meaningful in the long run.
