Question: What initiative are you most excited about today at your healthcare organization? How will it affect the future of healthcare delivery?
Todd Karpinski: The initiative that most excites me at our organization is the continued expansion of pharmacy services into the ambulatory setting. We are developing a system-wide strategy to continue to bring pharmacy services as close to the patient as we can. This will include the expansion of pharmacists into rural clinics, additional home-based therapies, medication adherence management, and tele-pharmacy.
Q: What is the most important lesson you’ve learned about delivering excellent patient experience?
TK: We need to ask our patients what they want in terms of health care services, where they want them, how they want them etc instead of dictating to them about what services they need and where they need them.
Q: What do you see as the most dangerous trend in healthcare right now?
TK: Rising drug costs and medication shortages.
