Question: What, from your perspective, is the biggest challenge about the future of work for hospitals, and what can they do about it? (i.e. automation, desire for more flexibility, clinician shortages, etc.)
Darrell Bodnar: The secure adoption and standardization of technology in healthcare and payment model reform. The two topics are on a crash course with each other and the disruption it will create will be unlike anything healthcare has ever experienced, but in the end, we will be better for it.
Q: How can hospitals reconcile the need to maintain inpatient volumes with the mission to keep people healthier and out of the hospital?
DB: The payment models need to change. Unchecked fee for service encourages waste and bloated charging for services while not improving patient outcomes. The US is first in healthcare costs globally, yet basic measures like life expectancy and infant mortality rates are among some of the lowest in industrialized nations. Healthcare is around 18% of US GDP. Value-based care, shared savings, bundled payments, and pay for performance models could be a better alternative.
Q: Where do you go for inspiration and fresh ideas?
DB: Podcast are always queued up. I find listening to cutting edge healthcare and business podcasts are my most inspirational and tend to foster innovation. I also tend to read a lot, so inspiration is never far away.
Q: What do you see as the most exciting opportunity in healthcare right now?
DB: Advancement in technology. Medical device automation, consumer apps and devices, remote monitoring, AI diagnostics and treatments, virtual care, precision & digital medicine, and advanced analytics and decision support are poised to make significant advances.
