Question: What initiative are you most excited about today at your healthcare organization? How will it affect the future of healthcare delivery?
Angela Shippy: I am excited about the opportunity to personalize care and provide a meaningful experience for our patients. Healthcare can be complex, our job is to simplify the process and understand what matters most to our patients. By improving access, providing knowledge and removing barriers, we start to engage patients in a way that improves health literacy and compliance.
Q: When it comes to innovation, what are some common pitfalls you see healthcare organizations making?
AS: In healthcare, we have the opportunity to innovate everything we do. We should be mindful to look at every process with a new lens, not simply look at the latest and greatest technology as the sole source of innovation and transformation. Also, having our frontline staff lead innovation is a definitive way to ensure that innovation adds value and is sustained.
Q: What do you see as the most dangerous trend in healthcare right now?
AS: Taking on initiatives and “flavor of the month” mentality. Simply stated, we need to focus on keeping patients well and redefining what good care looks like across the continuum. Regardless of the access point, our frontline staff takes the variable tactics and structures leaders deploy and turn it into meaningful workstreams. We need to be cognizant of the toll that can take. With that said, when we are clearly connected to purpose and articulate that the patient is in the center of all we do, we will be successful in all clinical, quality and operational goals.
Q: What future health IT capability will have the most significant impact on clinical workflows or patient outcomes?
AS: Healthcare IT will continue to evolve and improve how we interface with each other and our patients. Now that we have accepted that the electronic health record is not a replacement for the paper chart, and we are no longer trying to customize the EHR; we can be open to how it can enhance daily practice, integration and patient communication. We manage our lives on our smartphones, so the next meaningful advancement for providers and patients will be to use similar smart technology to improve engagement and compliance.
