Question: What is one lesson you learned early in your career that has helped you lead in health care?
Jo M. Wilson: You can’t stay in your office. You must get out and be involved. You must see what’s going on and get to know the staff on a personal level. You must build up credibility. You don’t want the first time that you go to your staff to be about something they have done wrong. It’s so important that you have a relationship with them.
Q: Where do you go for inspiration and fresh ideas?
JW: First, I will go to a completely different world. I volunteer at our county animal shelter. Working to make a difference for helpless animals goes a long way in providing inspiration. Second, when we are out in our community doing events for our Population Health program, I see the need that is there, and it just rejuvenates me and helps me to remember how badly I want to help people.
Q: What do you see as the most exciting opportunity in health care right now?
JW: In Maryland, we are so fortunate to have an all-payer system with our Total Cost of Care model. This means we can make a difference for people. By addressing the social determinants of health, we can assist with food insecurity, transportation, housing and other basic needs. Every day we see concrete results from providing these basic services.
At Becker's 4th Annual CEO + CFO Roundtable, taking place November 2–5 in Chicago, more than 1,500 hospital and health system executives tackle decisions that determine whether organizations thrive or merely survive: protecting margins under cost pressure, choosing where to grow, renegotiating payer relationships, stabilizing the workforce and proving real ROI on technology. This is where leaders work through them together, face-to-face. Apply for complimentary registration now.
