Question: What initiative are you most excited about today at your healthcare organization? How will it affect the future of healthcare delivery?
Bill Manzie: At Memorial Healthcare System, we are an organization that believes in providing the highest quality care at all times. As such, Memorial has committed to exploring opportunities using new innovation which will ultimately improve the patient experience and drive healthcare costs down. An example of this is our telehealth programs. Memorial is offering a number of telehealth programs that are redefining the patient care model as we know it today. How will it affect the future of healthcare delivery? Over the past few years, healthcare delivery has been changing at a pace that has never been seen before. This is a direct result of the initiative to improve the patient experience of care, improve the overall health of populations and reduce the overall cost of care. Health systems have recognized the need to change and are making the necessary steps to do so.
Q: When it comes to innovation, what are some common pitfalls you see healthcare organizations making?
BM: Some common pitfalls or mistakes I see health care organizations are related to direction. To explain, in our everyday lives, we see new innovation in the market place that can truly make our lives more convenient and efficient. The same could be said for healthcare, however, one must resist the desire to invest in new and exciting technology before realizing what opportunities or problems could be solved with this new shiny object. Steps that should be taken are to identify the opportunity or problem first, then look for technology or a process change that could help. Starting with the why will always lead to the most appropriate how…
Q: What is the most important lesson you’ve learned about delivering excellent patient experience?
BM: Many years ago, one of my executive leaders shared some words of wisdom with me. He said, “if you always look to do what’s right for the patient, you can be comfortable knowing that you are doing what is right.” It is not always easy to do business this way however, it never fails. To this day, I try to keep that in front of mind knowing this is why I am in healthcare.
