Providers should take cheer, he said, in a statistic from the RAC demonstration project, showing 64.4 percent of all claims appealed against RACs were overturned in the provider’s favor.
“Roughly stated, until a new set of numbers is presented, the RACs are guilty until proven innocent with regard to the quality of their work product,” wrote Mr. Spencer, a compliance officer for Fi-Med Management, a physician practice financial management company based in Wauwatosa, Wis.
“The RACs are mercenaries, conducting raids on your practices via paper bomb,” he continued. “Are you going to respond by doing whatever they say given the current evidence of incompetence, or are you going to fight back by utilizing the rules of the game to make their lives miserable?”
He advised to see a RAC audit for what it is, “a raid on today’s coffers for yesterday’s perceived mistakes.”
