The study, “Economic Contribution of Hospitals Often Overlooked,” found that hospitals employed 5.4 million people in 2009, making hospitals the second largest source of private sector jobs. Due to the “ripple effect” of hospital spending and spending of hospital employees, every hospital job supports two additional jobsn and every dollar spent by hospitals results in $2.30 of additional business activity.
In total, hospitals supported $2.2 trillion in economic activity in 2009.
