7 healthcare layoffs in October

The following healthcare layoffs were reported by Becker's Hospital Review in October. 

1. Biopharma company Lonza to lay off 60
Biopharmaceutical company Lonza will lay off 60 people at its manufacturing plant in Maryland, beginning Dec. 1.

2. Mercy Medical Center in Massachusetts to lay off employees, close hearing center
Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, Mass., told staff it will eliminate jobs and close its hearing center. 

3. GlaxoSmithKline to lay off 99 in Tennessee
Pharma giant GlaxoSmithKline will lay off 99 employees at its manufacturing facility in Memphis, Tenn.

4. 17 IT workers laid off at UMass Memorial Health Care
Worcester, Mass.-based UMass Memorial Health Care laid off 17 IT workers Oct. 11 as it works to close a budget gap.

5. Bayer cuts 227 California jobs
Drugmaker Bayer AG announced plans to lay off 227 employees at its manufacturing facility in Berkeley, Calif.

6. Momenta Pharmaceuticals guts leadership team, slashes 110 jobs
As part of a restructuring and cost reduction effort, Cambridge, Mass.-based Momenta Pharmaceuticals announced plans to lay off 110 workers and gut most of its leadership team. 

7. Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center cuts 50 jobs one month after hospital acquisition
Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center cut 50 jobs systemwid
