6 takeaways on the ACA, healthcare from recent Republican town hall meetings

Recent Republican efforts, including a repeal of the ACA, have drawn crowds at lawmakers' town hall meetings across the nation.

Here are six takeaways from these meetings.

1. Many Republicans decided they would not hold any events during the recent congressional recess due to potential protests they may encounter, The New York Times reports.

2. However, some lawmakers have gone against that trend. For instance, Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), had a town hall-style meeting Tuesday in her state, where she faced angry constituents and was questioned about various issues, including healthcare, the environment, education and President Donald Trump's links to Russia, according to the report.

3. Tennessee constituent Bruce Sullivan asked why Republicans had no real ACA replacement plan after seven years, according to the report. Ms. Blackburn pointed to a C-Span video from 2010 — the year President Barack Obama signed the ACA into law — in which she and other Republicans had met with President Obama in an effort to get a bipartisan program, The New York Times reports.

4. Rep. Dennis Ross (R-Fla.) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) also recently faced angry constituents, The New York Times reports.

5. At one point during Sen. Grassley's meeting, a 62-year-old Democratic pig farmer named Chris Petersen, the vice chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party's Rural Caucus, warned about an ACA repeal, according to the report.

"With all due respect, sir, you're the man that talked about the death panels," Mr. Petersen said. "We're going to create one great big death panel in this country."

6. Republicans have argued some angry protesters at town hall-style meetings do not represent a true grassroots outpouring, according to the report.
