300+ hospitals now team patients with lawyers to tackle legal issues

Over 300 healthcare systems, hospitals and federally qualified health centers have established programs that provide patients with in-house legal help, according to NPR.

These lawyers help with a range of services, from assisting gender reassignment patients with the legal hurdles associated with name changes to helping victims of domestic violence file restraining orders against spouses. Lawyers often come courtesy of pro-bono partnerships hospitals form with law firms.

Experts attribute the growth of these new services to a change in focus for many healthcare professionals. As fee-for-service systems give way to value-based care, providers are more encouraged to provide help that extends beyond medical care, especially for high users of medical services.
