1. Northwestern Memorial in Chicago Lays Off 230 Employees
Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago laid off 230 employees in the past month as part of an initiative to lessen its cost structure by 25 percent by 2017. Layoffs affected most of Northwestern’s departments, including administration, patient care and operations departments.
2. Saint Thomas Health in Tennessee Cuts 150 Positions
Nashville, Tenn.-based Saint Thomas Health eliminated 150 positions between two of its hospitals. About two-thirds of the cuts were at Saint Thomas Hospital, and the rest were at Baptist Hospital.
3. Yuma Regional Medical Center to Cut 135 Positions, Freeze Pensions
Yuma (Ariz.) Regional Medical Center announced the elimination of 135 positions — 65 of which are interim and 70 of which are core positions — and the freezing of pension plans. Employees will keep what they’ve earned in pension as of Sept. 30.
4. Westchester Medical Center in New York Lays Off 125 Employees
Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., laid off 125 people with administrative and patient care roles in the hospital. Most employees handled phone calls and paperwork, while a smaller number were directly involved in patient care, mainly in the emergency department.
5. California Pacific Medical Center Dismisses 120 Development Consultants
Officials from California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco laid off 120 consultants overseeing the facility’s pending $2.5 billion development plan.
6. Sound Shore, Mount Vernon Hospitals in New York Lay Off 80 Employees
The parent company of Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle, N.Y., and Mount Vernon (N.Y.) Hospital announced the layoffs of at least 80 employees. Sound Shore Health System is laying off pharmacists, lab workers, case managers, respiratory therapists, X-Ray technicians, clerks, housekeepers and dietary aides. Jobs will be eliminated Sept. 25.
7. Providence Hospitals in South Carolina Lays Off 56 Employees
Columbia, S.C.-based Providence Hospitals announced the layoff of 56 employees in mid-August. This round of layoffs is expected to save $5.8 million in 2012.
8. LSU Health’s E.A. Conway to Cut 22 Beds, 30 Jobs
E.A. Conway Medical Center in Monroe, La., — part of Baton Rouge-based Louisiana State University Health System — will eliminate 30 jobs and 22 beds.
9. Shriners Hospital in Florida Cuts 30 Jobs
Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa, Fla., eliminated the equivalent of 30 jobs in early August. All departments were affected in the recent round of cuts, which affected 20 full-time jobs, including one physician. Work hours were reduced for another 15 employees and two nonsurgical physicians, which amount to another 10 positions being cut.
10. Central Florida Health Alliance Outsources 27 Jobs
Central Florida Health Alliance, based in Lady Lake, Fla., announced plans to outsource approximately 27 local jobs to an Orlando company in an effort to trim costs.
11. Holy Family Hospital in Massachusetts to Eliminate 24 Jobs
Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Mass., is expected to eliminate 24 jobs when it closes its inpatient transitional surgical rehabilitation unit.
12. St. James Mercy Hospital in New York Reduces Staff
St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell, N.Y., announced plans in late August to reduce 18.25 full-time positions. The reductions will include the eliminations of positions, decreased work hours and the restructuring of departments.
13. Florida Hospital Fish Memorial Slashes 17 Jobs
Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City cut 17 full-time positions in late August. Positions affected were not disclosed.
14. St. Elizabeth Medical Center in New York Announces Layoffs
St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, N.Y., announced plans in late August to eliminate less than 10 positions from eight different departments.
15. Layoffs Pending at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Massachusetts
Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, Mass., announced the pending layoffs of an undisclosed number of employees.
16. Englewood Hospital in New Jersey to Close 2 Units, Lay Off Nurses
Englewood (N.J.) Hospital and Medical Center is planning to lay off an undisclosed number of employees and will permanently close its medical renal and progressive care unit.
17. Western Maryland Health System to Reduce Staff
Cumberland, Md.-based Western Maryland Health System announced staffing reductions through attrition and layoffs. The staffing reduction, which will affect an undisclosed number of employees, is expected to be implemented Oct. 1.
