The combined 14-hospital system will begin operating under the name Prisma Health in early 2019. While the original plan included both health systems keeping their own brands, officials decided a single brand for the merged organization was necessary. The health systems’ individual brands will be retired, but each hospital’s core name will be maintained.

“What we’re doing now will pave the way for transformative changes to healthcare in South Carolina,” Michael Riordan, co-CEO of Prisma Health, said in the news release. “And through our efforts, we’ve already identified ways to achieve more together by operating as one organization under a single name and brand identity.”

The merged entity will only handle the organization’s financial and strategic matters. Each system will continue to operate independently, the Greenville News reports.

Officials hope the merger, which was finalized in November 2017, will help the combined organization attain new grants, attract new subspecialists and provide residents with access to services currently unavailable. The name “Prisma Health” reflects the “diverse, multifaceted nature of the organization and its team,” officials said.

Officials are in the process of managing the rebranding campaign, which includes signage, printed material and vehicles, the report states. The merged organization, which was previously called SC Health Company, is the largest health system in South Carolina, with 1.2 million patients per year and $3.9 billion in annual revenue, the Greenville News reports.
