124-year-old Quincy Medical Center officially closes; ER stays open

Quincy (Mass.) Medical Center has officially closed, but the 24-hour satellite emergency care facility remains open, according to an Associated Press report.

The 124-year-old hospital, an affiliate with Boston-based Steward Health Care System, closed earlier this month with no inpatients remaining at the time. On Saturday, the hospital was replaced by the emergency care facility, which is slated to continue operations until at least the end of 2015, according to the report. Steward would have had to keep Quincy Medical Center open until February had state officials not waived a required 90-day notice, the report reads.

Steward, a for-profit health system with 11 hospital campuses, including Quincy Medical Center, told the Associated Press that Quincy was losing $20 million annually due to an increase in regional competition.
