Purchase Smarter: 3 Tech Trends in Diagnostic Imaging Technology

Novation, a healthcare supply group purchasing organization, has released a report which highlighted three top trends in diagnostic imaging technology to help guide hospitals' purchasing decisions.

1. Portable mobile tablets and apps. Portable mobile tablets, like the iPad, are becoming an increasingly popular tool for enhancing consultations with patients and increasing efficiency by reducing wait times for consultations. They do come with the additional cost of the corresponding apps, and the hospital may also incur replacement costs for lost or taken tablets.

Along with tablets, mobile apps are also gaining popularity. Increasingly powerful, user-friendly and readily available, the apps, such as Multi-modality Imaging Software, have made it easier for radiologists to review images on mobile devices.

2. Cloud imaging.
The cloud computing market for medical imaging in the U.S., estimated at $56.5 million in 2010, is expected to grow 27 percent annually through 2018. Cloud storage and archiving helps hospitals avoid up-front licensing fees, reduce maintenance costs, improve collaboration between departments and physicians and install system updates and upgrades more quickly.

3. Flat-panel technology in C-arms.
The C-arm market will begin to show greater integration of flat-panel technology. Flat-panel technology provides better image quality and increased reliability as the flat panels have less chance of overheating, which can result in shutdowns during procedures.
