David Miller, MD, CEO of Ann Arbor-based Michigan Medicine, has been appointed the next president and CEO of Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt Health, effective Jan. 1.
Dr. Miller, who also serves as executive vice president for medical affairs for the University of Michigan, will serve as dean of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in his new role, according to a July 15 Vanderbilt Health news release.
Dr. Miller will succeed Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, who in March announced plans to retire Dec. 31 after serving in both leadership roles for nearly two decades.
Before becoming CEO of Michigan Medicine in July 2025, Dr. Miller served as executive vice dean for clinical affairs at the University of Michigan Medical School and president of U-M Health. He also previously served as chief clinical officer for Michigan Medicine’s University Hospital and the Frankel Cardiovascular Center.
He will remain in his role until Dec. 1 to facilitate a smooth leadership transition, according to a July 15 Michigan Medicine news release.
During his time at Michigan Medicine, Dr. Miller has played a key role in improving quality, safety and patient experience while expanding access to care across Michigan through growth and strategic partnerships.
“This has been one of the most consequential decisions of my career,” Dr. Miller said in the release. “Michigan Medicine has been far more than my workplace — it has been my professional home. Leaving a community that I care so deeply about is incredibly difficult. I will always be grateful for the privilege of serving alongside such remarkable and committed team members, and for the trust that our patients and the communities we serve place in us every day.”
