Michael Stamos, MD, was appointed interim vice chancellor of health affairs at the University of California, Irvine, effective July 15, according to a June 23 letter from Chancellor Howard Gillman, PhD.
Dr. Stamos will succeed Steve Goldstein, MD, PhD, who is leaving UC Irvine to become president of the University of New Mexico. He will continue serving as dean of the UC Irvine School of Medicine, a role he has held since 2017.
In his interim role, Dr. Stamos will oversee UC Irvine’s $5.5 billion academic health enterprise, which spans education, research and patient care, the university said.
Dr. Stamos joined the UC Irvine School of Medicine in 2002, where he established the Division of Colon & Rectal Surgery. He became chair of the department of surgery in 2010 before being named dean.
UC Irvine said it will launch a national search for a permanent vice chancellor of health affairs.
