Stony Brook Medicine CEO exits

Hal Paz, MD, has left his role as CEO of Stony Brook (N.Y.) Medicine and executive vice president for health sciences at Stony Brook University.

William Wertheim, MD, has stepped into the role of interim executive vice president of Stony Brook Medicine, and TBR News Media reported Oct. 10 that Dr. Wertheim is replacing Dr. Paz temporarily. The system did not provide a reason for Dr. Paz's exit.

Dr. Paz joined Stony Brook Medicine in 2021 after spending time as executive vice president and chancellor for health affairs and as CEO of the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, according to his LinkedIn page. He also spent four years as executive vice president and chief medical officer of Aetna.

Dr. Wertheim joined Stony Brook in 1996 and serves as vice dean for graduate academic affairs of Stony Brook's Renaissance School of Medicine. He is also the Endowed Chair in Graduate Medical Education at the School of Medicine and president of Stony Brook Medicine Community Group.

An internal medicine physician, Dr. Wertheim has spent time as the internal medicine residency program director at Stony Brook and executive vice chair of the department of medicine and associate dean for clinical outreach. He also has experience as president of Stony Brook University Hospital's medical staff.
