Somnia Names Dr. Donald Helfer II Chief of Anesthesiology at San Juan Regional Medical Center

Somnia Anesthesia has announced Donald Helfer II, MD, has been named chief of anesthesiology at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, N.M., according to a news release from Somnia.

Anesthesia services at the hospital are provided by Resource Anesthesiology Associates of New Mexico, which is managed by Somnia.

 

Dr. Helfer brings more than 20 years of clinical anesthesiology and teaching experience to the position. He has served as a staff anesthesiologist at the hospital since 2010. He previously held chief of anesthesiology positions at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Ill., and at Shiprock (N.M.) Indian Hospital.

 

“Dr. Helfer has an outstanding background as both an anesthesiology clinician and as an educator,” said Robert C. Goldstein, MD, Somnia’s executive vice president and chief medical officer, in the release. “The Four Corners region will have the highest quality anesthesia care as a result of Don’s leadership and great familiarity with the community’s healthcare needs.”

 

Dr. Helfer is board certified in anesthesiology. He received his doctor of medicine degree from Washington University, completed his internship at St. Luke’s Hospital in St. Louis and performed his residency in anesthesiology at Washington University, where he served as chief resident.
