Daniel Messina, PhD, retired May 5 as president and CEO of Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, N.Y., after leading the organization for twelve years.
RUMC’s board appointed John Evanko, MD, as president, effective immediately, according to a May 5 hospital news release shared with Becker’s.
Dr. Evanko joined RUMC in April 2025 as executive vice president for medical affairs and chief physician executive. Prior to that, he was chief medical officer of Saint Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, Calif.
During Dr. Messina’s tenure as CEO since 2014, RUMC completed more than $300 million in capital improvements, including a 35,000-square-foot emergency department, 11 surgical suites and a 14-bed medical intensive care unit. The hospital also provided more than $52 million in uncompensated charity care in the past year.
Under Dr. Messina’s leadership, RUMC established the Richmond Health Network, which comprises more than 200 primary and specialty care providers across Staten Island, Brooklyn and Manhattan. The system also generated more than $20.4 million in private philanthropy and more than $72 million in grants, according to the release.
Dr. Messina will continue serving as a consultant advisor to Dr. Evanko and the leadership team through June 30 to support the transition.
