Rich Umbdenstock to retire as AHA CEO

Rich Umbdenstock, MHSA, president and CEO of Chicago-based American Hospital Association, has announced plans to retire at the end of 2015.

Mr. Umbdenstock has led the AHA since January 2007. Previously, he was the elected AHA board chair. Throughout his career, Mr. Umbdenstock served in various roles in hospital administration and governance for health systems, associations and HMOs.

Mr. Umbdenstock is vice chair of the National Quality Forum, serves on the board of Enroll America and co-chairs the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare Provider Council. He also serves on the National Priorities Partnership and the Center for Transforming Advanced Care Steering Committee.

Additionally, he’s published several books and articles for the healthcare board audience and has authored national survey reports for the AHA, the Health & Educational Trust and the American College of Healthcare Executives.

In a letter to his colleagues at the AHA, Mr. Umbdenstock wrote, “Being president of the AHA has been the highlight of my career. For the past eight years, it has been my privilege to learn from you and to represent you. Together, we have accomplished a great deal — building a better health system for all.”
