Phoebe Putney Health System CEO to retire in 2019

Joel Wernick, president and CEO of Albany, Ga.-based Phoebe Putney Health System, will retire in May 2019, according to The Albany Herald.

Mr. Wernick came to Phoebe Putney in 1988 from Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Fla. During his tenure, the health system grew to include 3,000-plus employees while increasing access to primary, specialty and inpatient care in Southwest Georgia.

Mr. Wernick also oversaw the formation of Phoebe Physician Group and a family medicine residency as well as spearheaded a partnership with Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

Two years ago, Mr. Wernick signed a contract extension that is slated to end in May 2019. The health system’s board has established a search committee to identify Mr. Wernick’s successor.
