The rejection comes two weeks after the hospital officially announced that Mr. Gerlach, the vice president and COO of Glendale (Calif.) Memorial Hospital and Health Center, would take the helm at Salinas Valley in late March.

“We are sorry that Matt felt he needed to reverse course on his decision. However, if this isn’t the right fit, it is better to know that sooner rather than later,” Harry Wardwell, the board president, told the Monterey County Herald.

No reason for Mr. Gerlach’s rejection was reported.
