David Cole, MD, president of Charleston-based Medical University of South Carolina, will retire in June 2027 after 13 years in the role.
Dr. Cole has led the academic health system since 2014.
During his tenure, MUSC grew its statewide footprint through new partnerships, expanded access to rural care and telehealth, increased research funding, and opened several major facilities, according to a June 29 system news release. Those projects include Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion in Charleston, as well as the Jean and Hugh K. Leatherman Behavioral Care Pavilion in Florence, S.C.
MUSC said Dr. Cole will remain part of the system as a professor and surgical oncologist, and the MUSC board of trustees will begin a nationwide search for his successor.
