After a controversial year, Paul Levy, CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, today announced his resignation, according to a Boston Globe report.

In an e-mail addressed to the hospital community, Mr. Levy said he decided to retire after turning 60 and needing new challenges. He made a general reference to the controversy he found himself in last year, when the board fined him $50,000 for an improper relationship with a female staffer.

“Over the last nine years, I have certainly made mistakes of degree, emphasis and judgment,” Mr. Levy said, according to the report.

“I have apologized to you directly for some of those, but I do so again, in the hope that such errors will not overshadow the many accomplishments and contributions of our hospital to the community and the health care industry. On the personal level, if I have slighted any one of you in any way or given you any cause for concern about my warm regard and respect for you, I doubly apologize,” Mr. Levy said, according to the report.

The board had also voted to take the incident into account when determining Mr. Levy’s compensation for 2011.
