For over two years, the $3.5 billion health department has been run by interim director Jonathan Fielding, MD, who has made it clear that he does not want the job permanently. The department has been plagued with financial problems and overcrowded emergency rooms.
The department has managed to keep the Los Angeles public hospital system afloat over the last 15 years with billions of dollars in funding from the federal government, but the county has failed on several fronts, including in its failed turnaround of Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center in Willowbrook.
William T. Fujioka, the county’s chief executive, said the search for a new director continues, according to the report.
