Indian River Medical Center COO resigns: 5 things to know

Steve Salyer, COO of Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach, Fla., has left his position, according to a report on TCPalm.com.

Here are five things to know about Mr. Salyer.

1. He worked as COO of IRMC for the past 19 months.

2. He was the subject of a recently-settled lawsuit between IRMC and his former employer, Health Management Associates in Sebastian, Fla., according to the report. The lawsuit involved a no-compete agreement Mr. Salyer signed when employed by Health Management Associates, which Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems later acquired. Mr. Salyer agreed he wouldn't work for a competitor within 100 miles of Sebastian. The case was settled out-of-court, and IRMC has not revealed any details of the agreement, citing confidentiality, according to the report.

3. IRMC CEO Jeff Susi said in a memo Mr. Salyer resigned to pursue other career opportunities, although there were rumors he was forced to leave, according to the report.

4. Trustees of the Indian River County Hospital District this week asked for clarification as to why Mr. Salyer resigned, according to the report. IRMC CEO Jeff Susi maintained that Mr. Salyer resigned to pursue career opportunities at larger organizations. "He decided he needed a fresh start," Mr. Susi said, according to the report. "And he shared personal reasons with me that I am not at liberty to share."

5. IRMC will soon begin a search for Mr. Salyer's replacement.
