Laurie Athans, DNP, RN, has been named chief nursing officer of Golisano Children’s Hospital in Rochester, N.Y.

Dr. Athans previously held the role in an interim capacity and succeeds Sue Bezek, MSN, who served as CNO for nearly seven years, the hospital said in an Oct. 20 press release.

Dr. Athans has worked in pediatric nursing for more than 15 years. She previously served as director of pediatric nursing at Golisano Children’s for five years and began her career as a pediatric ICU nurse at the University of Rochester Medical Center — Golisano Children’s parent company.

Dr. Athans originally trained as an engineer before switching careers and entering nursing.

As chief nurse, Dr. Athans said she plans to strengthen the hospital’s community-based preventive care efforts, including expanding school-based telemedicine programs and launching a new mobile health clinic.
