Of the 400 hospitals and 382,236 cases analyzed from 2006 to 2010, 11 percent were performed under neuraxial anesthesia, 14.2 percent under a mix of neuraxial and general and 74.8 percent under general alone.
Researchers from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City found neuraxial anesthesia decreased patients’ complications, length of stay, costs and 30-day mortality. However, patients who received neuraxial anesthesia were on average older than those patients receiving general anesthesia, according to the study.
