Carrie Romano, DNP, RN, will become chief nurse executive of Cincinnati Children’s on Sept. 6, a role the health system has renamed from chief nursing officer to reflect nursing’s expanded enterprise leadership.
Dr. Romano, who has more than 36 years of nursing experience, succeeds Barb Tofani, MSN, RN, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of patient services, who will retire Nov. 2. Ms. Tofani’s tenure included four consecutive Magnet designations from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, according to an Aug. 5 news release shared with Becker’s.
Cincinnati Children’s elevated the CNO position to chief nurse executive, saying the name change reflects responsibility for organizational strategy, innovation, workforce development and the future of care.
Dr. Romano joined Cincinnati Children’s as a staff nurse in 1989 and most recently served as vice president of patient services, overseeing ambulatory services, care management and home care services.
