Andrew Dreyfus, CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, said hospitals and physicians need to better contain healthcare costs or face level or reduced payments from his company, according to a Boston Globe report.
Mr. Dreyfus encouraged the shift to a global payment plan in letter sent to more than 400 physician practice and hospital leaders last week. He said BCBS of Massachusetts, the state’s largest health insurer, will be strict in negotiations with physicians and hospitals that do not accept global payments.
Many officials are calling Mr. Dreyfus’ message a “wake-up call,” according to the report, reflecting the need for restructuring in Massachusetts healthcare delivery system. BCBS of Massachusetts recently reported the success of its new system of paying physicians a fixed amount per patient.
