Cedars-Sinai Medical Center taps UMass Memorial exec as COO: 4 takeaways

Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai Medical Center named Jeffrey A. Smith, MD, executive vice president of hospital operations and COO, effective in August.

Here are four takeaways:

1. Dr. Smith currently serves as executive vice president and COO at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Mass.

2. He previously served in several leadership roles at Milwaukee-based Aurora Health Care, including as executive vice president and interim chief clinical officer.

3. An internal medicine physician, Dr. Smith also holds a juris doctor degree from Milwaukee-based Marquette University Law School and a master's degree in medical management from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

4. He will succeed Mark Gavens as Cedars-Sinai COO. Mr. Gavens is retiring.
