Catholic Health Services appoints vice president of clinical transformation and population health

Rockville Centre, N.Y.-based Catholic Health Services has appointed Joel J. Shu, MD, MBA, vice president of clinical transformation and population health, a newly created role designed to support the system’s progressive population health strategy.

Dr. Shu, a board-certified anesthesiologist, will report to Patrick M. O’Shaughnessy, DO, MBA, FACEP, CHCQM, senior vice president for medical affairs and CMO.

Before joining CHS, Dr. Shu was chair of the medical staff peer review, director of the electronic medical record implementation, director of continuing medical education, and project director of an accountable care organization for Jersey City (N.J.) Medical Center. There, he instituted clinical practice changes within the ACO to improve various aspects, including bundled payment care, inpatient pain and symptom management program, outpatient cancer rehabilitation program and improving patient satisfaction.

Dr. Shu earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and his master’s degree in business administration from New York University Stern School of Business in New York City.
