Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network has tapped surgical oncologist Nipun Merchant, MD, as the network’s first surgeon-in-chief.
Dr. Merchant was also appointed chair of the network’s department of surgery. He will step into both roles in February, according to an Oct. 14 news release from Allegheny Health Network.
He previously served as the Alan S. Livingstone Professor of Surgery, chief surgical officer, executive director of perioperative services and chief of the division of surgical oncology at the University of Miami Health System and the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, also in Miami. He was also associate director of translational research and founding director of the Sylvester Pancreatic Cancer Research Institute at Sylvester, the release said.
Dr. Merchant succeeds David Bartlett, MD, director of the AHN Cancer Center and president of the Allegheny-Singer Research Institute, who has served as interim chair of the department of surgery.
