Albany Medical Center names chief of cardiothoracic surgery: 5 things to know

Francis D. Ferdinand, MD, has been named chief of the division of cardiothoracic surgery at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center, and will serve as director of the hospital’s cardiothoracic surgery program.

Here are five things to know about Dr. Ferdinand.

1. Dr. Ferdinand, a cardiothoracic surgeon, most recently served as the surgical director of cardiovascular quality and strategy at Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood, Pa.

2. He earned a medical degree from Autonomous University of Guadalajara’s school of medicine, based in Mexico, and the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore.

3. He was also a senior registrar in cardiac surgery in the academic department of cardiothoracic surgery at Royal Brompton Hospital, which is partnered with the National Heart and Lung Institute of Imperial College in London, as well as a visiting fellow at the Hôpital Broussais in Paris.

4. Dr. Ferdinand currently serves on the executive committee of the board of governors for the American College of Surgeons and the patient safety task force for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

5. He is the past president of both the Metropolitan Philadelphia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery.
