Mr. Merlis has been president and CEO since 1999 of GBMC HealthCare, which runs 360-bed Greater Baltimore Medical Center.
As head of Abington, Mr. Merlis will also be CEO of 665-bed Abington Memorial Hospital.
Abington has expanded from a single hospital into a health system, having acquired 120-bed Lansdale Hospital last year.
