CEO Keith Hovan: Improving Care Access for Southcoast Health System and Southcoast Hospitals Group

Keith Hovan has served as president of New Bedford, Mass.-based Southcoast Health System since October 2010 and added the title of CEO of the system in July 2011. He has led the Southcoast Hospitals Group since June 2008.

Before joining Southcoast in 2008, Mr. Hovan was the executive vice president and COO of Danbury (Conn.) Hospital. He has also held leadership positions at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City and Bridgeport (Conn.) Hospital.

While at the helm of Danbury Hospital, Mr. Hovan led the development of the health system's center of excellence strategy. During that time, the hospital was named as a Solucient Top 100 Hospital for three years in a row.

Southcoast has also benefitted from Mr. Hovan's leadership. The system has announced new expansions and clinical collaborations to increase care access for its patients. In 2012, Southcoast Health System announced a collaboration with Boston Children's Hospital to enhance pediatric care access for families in Southcoast's region. "We are excited to partner with Boston Children's Hospital…to enhance pediatric inpatient and outpatient care available to families on the south coast," Mr. Hovan said in a statement.

The system also broke ground on a new ambulatory care center in 2012. "Southcoast's new Fairhaven Ambulatory Care Center will improve access to medical care that patients previously had to travel for," Mr. Hovan said.

In recognition of leading Southcoast to superior clinical, financial and operational performance, Mr. Hovan was named on Becker's Hospital Review's 2012 list of 100 Non-Profit Hospital, Health System CEOs to Know.

Mr. Hovan is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and was recently named the vice president of the Massachusetts Council of Community Hospitals.
