Viewpoint: How email archiving supports HIPAA compliance

Healthcare organizations should implement email archivers to ensure HIPAA compliance, wrote Azam Qureshi, president and chief technology officer of Intradyn, in a HealthTechZone.com op-ed.

Mr. Qureshi — who cofounded Intradyn, a Mendota Heights, Minn.-based email archiving solutions provider — said  automatic email processes may store emails containing personal health information in an unsecure manner, which is "a clear violation of HIPAA". This poses a particular challenge should a physician want to discard an email, according to Mr. Qureshi.

"You can't simply hit delete and expect your sensitive data is safe," he wrote.

An email archiving solution, by contrast, enables an organization to set administrative rules that restrict access from unauthorized personnel, Mr. Qureshi wrote. It may also capture and index emails in a secure manner, to provide protection and prevent data loss.
