The Utah State Senate has passed a bill designed to prevent health data security breaches, according to a report by The Salt Lake Tribune.
The legislation would require the State Department of Technology Services to follow industry best practices to protect personal data, which includes forming a committee of experts to help determine what those practices are. If the state cannot follow these best practices under the current budgets, the legislation requires the chief technology officer of the state to inform the House and the Senate.
Last year, nearly 780,000 people in Utah were victims of a health data security breach, where social security numbers and other data were wiped out from Health Department computers.
The bill will now go to the House, according to the report.
